Uganda Electricity Distribution Limited (UEDCL) has officially renamed the YAKA prepaid electricity system to "Light", following its takeover of power distribution from Umeme.

The announcement was made by Dr. Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, who assured customers that the prepaid electricity service will continue uninterrupted.

What Changes for Customers?

  • YAKA has now been rebranded to "Light", but the service remains the same.
  • Customers can still buy electricity units through the usual platforms, including MTN, Airtel, and other payment channels.
  • The telecom menu option for purchasing power will now show "UEDCL Light" instead of YAKA.

Look out for UEDCL Light on telecom menus, as YAKA has now been replaced with ‘Light’,” Minister Nankabirwa stated during the official handover ceremony.

UEDCL officially took over electricity distribution after the end of Umeme’s 20-year concession. The government’s goal is to enhance efficiency, improve service delivery, and cut costs for consumers.

While the name change has sparked mixed reactions from customers, UEDCL has assured the public that all prepaid and postpaid electricity services will continue as before.
