Excitement and anticipation filled the Speaker’s Chambers as Erias Nalukoola was officially sworn in as the new Member of Parliament for Kawempe North. The oath-taking ceremony took place at on Wednesday, presided over by Speaker Anita Among, with Parliament in recess.
Speaker Among clarified that the swearing-in was conducted in her chambers to ensure Kawempe North did not remain unrepresented any longer.
“We would not want to deprive the good people of Kawempe representation, which is why we are swearing him in here. The law requires it,” she explained.
Nalukoola’s swearing-in was facilitated by Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi, who formally introduced him. After taking the oath to defend the Constitution of Uganda, Nalukoola concluded with the words, "So help me Allah," before receiving a copy of the Constitution and the Parliamentary Rules of Procedure.
Nalukoola won the Kawempe North MP seat with 17,980 votes, marking his official entry into the 11th Parliament. He was accompanied by his father and notable figures such as Hajj Takuba and Uganda Law Society Vice President Anthony Asiimwe.
In his speech, Nalukoola expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and acknowledged the challenges faced by the people of Kawempe North, particularly the ongoing floods affecting the area.
Speaker Among recognized these concerns, while Ssenyonyi reaffirmed the Opposition’s commitment to the constituency, referring to Kawempe North as a “battlefront” that needed representation.
With his swearing-in, Kawempe North now has a voice in Parliament, ensuring the constituency’s needs and concerns will be part of national decision-making.
