The government has officially approved the creation of five new cities, with operations set to kick off by July 2025, a move which is part of an ambitious plan first announced in 2020 aiming to establish 15 new cities across the country. But, as is often the case, funding slowed things down, and only 10 cities have made it past the finish line so far.

Cities like Arua, Gulu, Jinja, Mbarara, Fort Portal, Masaka, Mbale, Soroti, Hoima, and Lira are already active with activity. However, the remaining five—Wakiso, Entebbe, Kabale, Moroto, and Nakasongola—had been left in limbo due to financial hurdles.

Well, the wait is finally over! Finance Minister Matia Kasaija broke the exciting news during the National Budget Conference in Kampala, confirming that the necessary funds have been secured to launch the remaining cities by the start of the next financial year. This expansion will bring the total number of cities in Uganda to 16, including the capital city, Kampala.

Kasaija wasted no time in urging the soon-to-be cities to buckle up for their big debut. “Start preparing now,” he advised the transitioning municipalities, emphasizing the importance of detailed planning, proper surveying, and meticulous mapping.
