The late Shaka Ssali, a celebrated journalist and political analyst, will be cremated, with his ashes sent to Uganda and other African countries, in accordance with his final wish.
The revelation was made by journalist Sudhir Byaruhanga, who shared on X (formerly Twitter) that Ssali had requested to have his remains cremated and spread across Africa.
“We shall respect his wish, and soon, a date for his sendoff service in Washington, D.C., and Uganda will be communicated. #RIPShakaSsali,” Byaruhanga stated.
Shaka Ssali, who passed away last week at the age of 71, was a revered voice in African journalism, best known for his in-depth political analysis and dedication to telling Africa’s stories.
For over two decades, he provided a platform for critical discourse, interviewing African leaders and intellectuals while bridging the gap between the continent and the global stage.
His signature phrases—“I’m profoundly honored and exceedingly humbled” and “Let’s keep the African hope alive”—became an essential part of his identity, cementing his place as one of the most influential journalists of his time.
His final wish reflects his deep connection to Africa, ensuring that his legacy remains woven into the land he so passionately represented.
