Uganda’s Halima Nakaayi has qualified for the 800m race after finishing second in heat one behind Kenya’s Mary Moraa. The Kenyan clocked 1:59:22 to finish ahead of the Ugandan who was late by only 13 seconds but managed to make it for the finals.

Nakaayi will head into the finals hopeful of beating Moraa who she closely contested and the absence of Athing Mu will give her more confidence. The American dominated the olympics event and was also at her best in the recently concluded World Athletics Champions in Eugene-US.

Halima Nakaayi will look to replicate her performance in the Doha World Athletics where she won gold.

Ugandans will be eager to see their own win gold on Saturday 6th August in a replication of the the 800m win three years ago.

Uganda’s only gold medal at the Birmingham event came over the weekend when Victor Kiplangat won the marathon.
