UCC Orders Immediate Suspension of Pearl FM Over Broadcasting Violations

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has suspended Pearl FM (107.9 FM) from broadcasting after the station was found in violation of the Minimum Broadcasting Standards.

The decision follows concerns over MPULIDDE KAMENYA, a radio program hosted by Mr. Kalule Sulaiman, which allegedly aired unverified claims of vote rigging and ballot stuffing in Kawempe North. The UCC cited the content as sensational, misleading, and potentially inciting violence. Additionally, the presenter was accused of failing to uphold journalistic ethics by making careless and inaccurate statements.

UCC’s Directives to Pearl FM

As part of the suspension, Pearl FM has been instructed to:

1. Cease all broadcasting operations immediately until investigations are concluded.
2. Provide a written explanation addressing the alleged breach.
3. Submit proof of certification and registration of the presenter, Mr. Kalule Sulaiman.
4. Present evidence of a pre-listening or time-delay system for live broadcasts.

The UCC has warned that failure to comply with these directives could result in additional penalties, including a longer suspension or even the revocation of Pearl FM’s broadcasting license.
