Erasmus Otim, a respected mathematics and science teacher at Kumi Modern Primary School, is facing the law after being caught red-handed allegedly stealing chickens from the Reverend Sisters of St. Paul’s Catholic Church Kumi Convent.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Christmas Day, where Otim, 40, was reportedly accompanied by an accomplice identified as Okiror. Their nocturnal misadventure came to a halt when vigilant community members, who had ramped up security patrols due to increasing theft in the area, apprehended the duo.
The pair was held overnight at a resident’s home before being handed over to authorities the following morning. However, things took a turn for the worse when Okiror tried to flee, triggering the fury of residents who nearly lynched him. He was rescued by officers from Kumi Central Police Station and is now receiving treatment at Kumi Health Centre IV for injuries sustained during the ordeal.
Otim, on the other hand, maintains his innocence, claiming he was merely purchasing the chickens from Okiror, whom he admitted is well-known for theft in the area. However, his justification has raised eyebrows, with one officer questioning:
"Even if that were true, which business transaction happens at 2:00 am?"
The incident has left the community both shocked and amused, given Otim’s esteemed reputation as an educator. Police investigations are underway, and the duo is likely to face charges once the case is concluded.
