Chaos in Parliament as MP Zaake Hospitalized After Brawl Over MP Anthony Akol Sitting in His Spot

A heated altercation broke out in Uganda's Parliament on Wednesday morning, resulting in the hospitalization of Mityana MP Francis Zaake. Tensions escalated quickly during a plenary session after MP Zaake clashed with Kilak County MP Anthony Akol in a physical confrontation, reportedly initiated when Zaake attempted to take Akol’s seat.

The confrontation came amid a contentious debate led by Opposition MPs, who raised alarm over suspected armed security personnel in civilian attire inside the parliamentary chambers. 

According to reports, Joel Ssenyonyi, Leader of the Opposition, voiced concerns on behalf of opposition members, asserting that MPs had been subjected to “humiliating checks” on their way into Parliament. These concerns were dismissed by Speaker Anita Among, who clarified that security checks were routine due to the presence of visiting East African Legislative Assembly MPs.

The clash began when MP Zaake demanded that the masked men behind the Speaker's chair undergo security checks after allegedly spotting a firearm. 

Although Speaker Among instructed the Sergeant at Arms to perform a check, Zaake’s return to his seat led to a scuffle with MP Akol, who reportedly accused Zaake of occupying his spot despite Speaker Among’s allowance of free seating for the crowded session.

The live feed of the parliamentary session was cut shortly after the altercation, and Speaker Among exited the chamber. Zaake, who sustained injuries, was seen being carried out to an ambulance for immediate medical attention.

This incident highlights ongoing friction within Parliament over security measures, which opposition MPs argue infringe on their safety and rights while performing their legislative duties.
