Stand-up comedian Obed Lubega, aka Reign Omusoyisoyi from comedy duo "Maulana and Reign," appeared before Mwanga II Magistrate’s Court in Mengo on Thursday, July 25, 2024. Principal Magistrate Adam Byarugaba read out charges accusing Reign of attempting to spread hate speech.

In a courtroom filled with both tension and curiosity, Reign firmly denied the allegations. The judge granted him bail set at Shs 1 million, while his sureties, including his father and comedy partner Maulana Kasozi, secured non-cash bonds totaling Shs 10 million.

Reign's legal team argued for his bail, highlighting his stable residence and the bailable nature of the charge. They underscored the substantiality of his sureties, a factor that played in his favor as the judge found them satisfactory. However, the conditions were clear: Reign must remain peaceful, not interfere with the state's witnesses, and comply with the ongoing investigation.

The comedian's arrest on Tuesday, July 23rd, at his home in Mutundwe, Rubaga South Division, was linked to allegations of inciting youth to join the #MarchToParliament protests. Authorities claim Reign used his social media platforms to encourage hostility towards police officers maintaining law and order.

The courtroom saga will continue on August 27th when the case is mentioned again. Reign was not alone in his ordeal; over 60 youths, accused of being public nuisances and engaging in disorderly conduct, were also arrested and remanded to Luzira prison. They are scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, July 30th, for further case mentions.
