The Buganda Kingdom has officially accepted an apology from the family of the late Joseph Tamale Mirundi, marking the end of a long-standing rift between the outspoken former presidential press secretary and the kingdom. The formal apology was delivered by Mirundi’s elder brother and family heir, Mr. John Ssali Ssebunnya, during a visit to the Buganda Prime Minister (Katikkiro), Charles Peter Mayiga, at Bulange Mengo.
The kingdom shared images of the meeting on its official social media platform, showing the Katikkiro alongside Mr. Ssebunnya, Mirundi’s widow, and several of his children.
During the meeting, Katikkiro Mayiga stressed the importance of responsible communication, especially in the digital era, stating, "The internet never forgets. If you misuse it, you will live to regret your actions in the future," referring to the controversial remarks made by Mirundi during his lifetime.
The Katikkiro commended the family for their effort to reconcile with the kingdom, acknowledging their apology as a noble act.
He officially accepted their apology and prayed for God’s forgiveness for any wrongs committed by the deceased. This gesture of reconciliation seeks to heal the wounds caused by Mirundi's public criticism of the kingdom during his tenure as President Yoweri Museveni’s press secretary.
The Mirundi family’s visit to Mengo follows a requiem mass held for Mirundi in Bunamwaya on August 15th, where Mr. Ssali expressed the family’s desire to repair relations with the kingdom. He pledged to seek forgiveness from anyone hurt by his late brother's remarks, stating, "The dead do not speak; we speak for them."
