The education sector mourns the loss of a stalwart as Mathew Bukenya, former Executive Secretary of the Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB), has passed away as confirmed by the spokesperson Jennifer Kalule.


Kalule reveaed that Bukenya died on Sunday night. The exact cause of his death remains undisclosed, with an official statement from UNEB pending.

Mathew Bukenya's legacy is one of dedication and reform. After retiring on March 31, 2016, he left behind a legacy of integrity and innovation. Originally an accountant, Bukenya was called out of retirement in 1997 to helm UNEB, following the dismissal of his predecessor, David Livingstone Ongom.

During his 17-year tenure, Bukenya revolutionized the examination board. He tackled examination malpractice head-on, implementing rigorous measures to conceal examiners’ identities and dismiss those who breached confidentiality. His efforts significantly curbed dishonest practices and fortified the credibility of Uganda’s national examinations.
