Months after apprehending fraudsters that were hawking Primary Leaving Examination papers in districts such as Kampala, Mukono, Mbarara and Mubende, a team of Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) and police arrested more six over the weekend for conning primary schools with fake examination papers.
According to the officer-in-charge of the national examinations Mr James Turyatemba, the suspects were arrested over weekend in the Kampala Metropolitan areas of Namungoona, Namugongo, Mukono, Nsangi, Wakiso and Masaka respectively.
“By the time of their arrest, UNEB had not released any Primary Leaving Examinations to the field. These unethical people have been collecting large sums of money ranging from Shs400,000 to Shs10m from various schools with a promise that they would deliver them the genuine UNEB examinations,” said Mr. Turyatemba.
Speaking to the deputy Ugandan Police Spokesperson, Ms Polly Namaye, Blizz Uganda has learnt that the suspects that include headteachers and teachers brings the number of those caught for allegedly engaging in exam malpractice to 10 though they can't disclose the schools that fell culprit for fear of victimising candidates.
“The four we arrested last month are going through the court process. We arrested the six over the weekend because they were holding meetings in Kireka and that is how we got them and we have them in our custody,” she said.
The Primary Leaving Examinations for the calendar year 2019 is a day exercise that kicks off on Monday 4th and Tuesday 5th November respectively with over 69,5793 candidates and according to Mr Turyatemba, unlike in the past when candidates were required to write the examination centre number on their answer sheets, this time candidates will be given a random number assigned to the centre so that it is not predictable to examiners marking the scripts to deter possible favouritism.
