Makerere University Vice Chancellor, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe has on Saturday interdicted one of the university lecturers for assaulting his student in class. Mr. Bernard Wandera, a lecturer at the School of Social Sciences was ordered to leave office to allow investigations into his conduct by a special committee.

He’s to receive half pay in the duration of the probe.

“…I hereby interdict you from the University in order to protect the reputation of the University, its students, and in order not to jeopardize the on-going investigations,” Prof Nawangwe wrote to Wandera.

“A Committee to investigate allegations of assault, harassment and willful professional misconduct against you will be constituted. You will be invited to participate in its proceedings. During your interdiction, you will receive half pay and you will not be allowed to access your office or other University premises (unless otherwise invited)."

On Friday November 18th, Mr Wandera, who lectures in the department of Social Work and Social Administration lost his temper in a lecturer at the university’s CTF 1 and slapped a female student while ordering her to vacate his class.

Officials from the Department of Gender Studies also reached out to the unnamed victim for support. In the interdiction letter yesterday, Prof Nawangwe said Wandera’s actions were in breach of several rules and laws governing the university and government public service.
