Nanyondo And Nakaayi Raise Uganda's Hopes For A Medal At Olympics

Uganda's duo of female athletes, Halima Nakayi and Winnie Nanyondo made it to the semi finals of the Women’s 800m race in the Tokyo Olympics in Japan.

Winnie missed out on the first position only by a second after she clocked 2:02.02 time, to finish behind France's Renelle Lamote in the first head.

On the other note however, Nakaayi, the reigning world champion finished fourth in the second heat but qualified for the Semis as one of the best losers across all the six heats.

The events took place in the wee hours of Friday 30th July,2021. Their progress gives hopes to Ugandans for a medal after Uganda's first participants who include Kathleen Grace Noble (Rowing), David Ssemujju (Boxing), Shadir Musa Bwogi (Boxer) and Catherine Nanziri (Boxer) all exited the Olympics at the their first attempt.

The 2:00.92 timing means Nakaayi is the second best of the six got from across the six heats. They are to compete in the semi finals on Saturday, July 31 starting at 2:50pm (Ugandan time).
