Kampala Woman Member of Parliament Hon. Shamim Malende has been airlifted to Nairobi Hospital in Kenya, for specialized medical care following a prolonged period of serious health complications.

For several months, Hon. Malende has been hospitalized at Nsambya Hospital, battling persistent abdominal pain and other complications allegedly resulting from injuries sustained during a scuffle at Parliament. The incident occurred during the controversial passing of bills, particularly the one rationalizing the Uganda Coffee Development Authority.

Despite receiving continuous treatment in Uganda, Malende’s condition has not improved significantly. Her inability to walk, speak properly, or fulfill her parliamentary duties prompted medical professionals to recommend further intervention abroad.

In a statement to the press before her departure, the legislator emotionally recounted her ordeal:

"I have been in severe abdominal pain for months. I can’t speak properly. I can’t walk. The doctors here have done what they could, but they believe I need an operation, which will now be conducted in Nairobi," she said.

The transfer to Nairobi Hospital, a renowned regional facility, comes at a time when concerns have been growing about the health and well-being of the outspoken legislator known for her activism and legal background.

Her supporters, colleagues, and members of the National Unity Platform (NUP) have expressed solidarity and are calling for prayers and support during this critical time.
