Uganda Cranes captain Emmanuel Okwi has officially announced his retirement from international football, marking the end of an era for one of Uganda’s most celebrated footballers.

The 32-year-old forward made the emotional announcement on March 18, 2025, revealing that his decision was driven by his desire to pave the way for younger talent as Uganda prepares for the upcoming 2025 CHAN tournament and the highly anticipated 2027 AFCON, which will be hosted in East Africa.

"An exciting new era for Ugandan football is coming up, with East Africa hosting CHAN later this August and subsequently AFCON 2027. With many young footballers emerging, I believe it is time for me to bow out and give them the opportunity to shine," Okwi said.

Having proudly donned the Uganda Cranes jersey for over a decade, Okwi leaves behind a legacy of dedication, leadership, and remarkable performances on the field. Throughout his career, he played a pivotal role in Uganda’s football success, including memorable AFCON appearances and crucial goals that helped lift the team to greater heights.

Although stepping away from national duty, Okwi assured fans that he is retiring with his head held high, satisfied with his contributions to Ugandan football.

Fans and football lovers across the country have taken to social media to express their gratitude for Okwi’s service, hailing him as a true legend of the game.
