Ugandan music legend Jose Chameleone is set to receive treatment abroad, with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni stepping in to facilitate his medical care. The “Badilisha” singer, who has been battling acute pancreatitis due to heavy alcohol consumption, will be flown to the United States next week for specialized treatment at Allina Health Mercy Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Initially, flight tickets for Chameleone’s overseas trip were purchased by Juliet Zawedde, a close friend of the musician. However, it has now been confirmed that State House will cover all the medical expenses, including the treatment and other associated costs. This intervention comes after mounting concerns about Chameleone’s health, which has deteriorated in recent months.

Chameleone’s health issues first gained widespread attention when his son, Abba Marcus Mayanja, revealed the toll substance abuse had taken on his father. Abba’s emotional plea to the public called for collective support to help the musician overcome his struggles. The younger Mayanja also expressed frustration over promoters continuing to book Chameleone for performances despite his declining health.

During a media briefing, Hon. Balaam, a close ally of Chameleone, confirmed the President's directive, emphasizing that Museveni’s primary goal is to ensure the musician recovers and has the opportunity to continue his contributions to the entertainment industry. “The President wishes to see Chameleone live longer and continue contributing to the entertainment industry,” Balaam stated.

Medical experts had previously raised concerns about the risks of flying Chameleone in his current condition, advising against the long flight.

However, with State House’s involvement and the plan to send him for specialized treatment abroad, it is hoped that the medical intervention will provide Chameleone with the best chance for a full recovery.

As Chameleone prepares for this critical journey, fans across Uganda and East Africa are united in their prayers and well-wishes for his recovery. The outpouring of support from the public highlights the deep connection people have with the artist, whose music has left an indelible mark on the region.
