Freddie Kasavu, the 20-year-old son of the late singer Evelyn Lagu, has been discharged from a rehabilitation center where he was receiving treatment for schizoaffective disorder. Freddie, who had been struggling with his mental health, was admitted earlier this year following a crisis triggered by the sudden death of his mother in September 2023.
Evelyn Lagu, a beloved Ugandan singer, succumbed to kidney failure, leaving her son behind to face a series of challenges, including financial instability. Freddie admitted in previous interviews that he was overwhelmed with bills after losing the support his mother provided for all his basic needs.
Upon returning home from rehabilitation, Freddie was shocked to discover that part of their family property had been encroached upon. Unknown individuals had reportedly graded the rear section of their house, taking away important assets such as the well and water tank.
"When I went back home, I found that they had taken over the rear part of our house. The well, the water tank—everything was taken. I don’t know why it happened, but everything was destroyed," Freddie said.
Freddie believes that this act of land grabbing was an attempt to intimidate him, knowing that he was a vulnerable orphan without the means to protect what his late mother had left behind. He expressed frustration and sadness at the situation, emphasizing that people knew how hard his mother had worked to provide for him.
"I think they had planned it all out. When it happened, people came around and cried because they knew how hard my mum had worked to leave something behind," he added.
One of Evelyn Lagu’s closest friends, actor Sserunkuma Moses Bbosa, has been assisting Freddie in dealing with this injustice. Bbosa confirmed that they are currently investigating the matter and searching for the perpetrators responsible for the illegal land encroachment. He also assured that the land was legally purchased by the late singer, with all necessary documents in place.
"I heard about it and visited the place. We have not yet received answers as to why it happened, and we are currently looking for the person responsible. The late Evelyn Lagu was not under any debt for that land. It was fully paid for, and there are supporting documents to prove this," Bbosa stated.
