Ugandan singer and politician Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, aka Bobi Wine, has officially graduated with a Bachelor of Law Degree from Cavendish University. he started this journey back in August 2016 when he joined International University of East Africa (IUEA).
Bobi Wine’s path to this achievement wasn’t exactly smooth sailing. His initial choice of IUEA was short-lived due to concerns about the university’s accreditation for law programs, as noted by National Unity Platform (NUP) Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya. Bobi Wine then made the switch to Cavendish University, which was fully accredited and promised a more stable academic environment.
Eight years later, despite encountering numerous challenges—like missing some lectures and facing an unexpected extra semester—Bobi Wine has emerged victorious. His perseverance paid off, and he celebrated his graduation with a heartfelt message of gratitude.
In his speech, Bobi Wine reminisced about his academic journey and expressed his appreciation to those who supported him along the way. “I finally did it!” he exclaimed, adding a touch of humor by recalling his earlier hesitation and how his friend Sylver Kyagulanyi had always been a source of encouragement.
He also thanked Don Sheriff, a fellow law student, for their shared passion for freedom and justice. Special thanks went to David Lewis Rubongoya for guiding him through the accreditation switch and to his wife, Barbie Kyagulanyi, whose relentless support helped him push through the tough times.
Bobi Wine didn’t shy away from acknowledging the hurdles he faced. His graduation was delayed due to missed lectures, leading to an additional semester and a full year’s wait. He even faced scrutiny from detractors, with some going so far as to petition the National Council for Higher Education to review his academic records. But after an exhaustive investigation, Bobi Wine was cleared to graduate.
Reflecting on his journey, Bobi Wine shared a mix of emotions, expressing pride and a touch of nostalgia. He honored his late mother’s memory, acknowledging that she would have been incredibly proud. Above all, he credited his faith and thanked God for guiding him through every obstacle.
"You’re never too late to achieve your goals,” he urged, reminding everyone that perseverance and faith can turn dreams into reality.
