The Beast Mode MvP talent search by NRG Radio Uganda has reached an exciting phase with video submissions now closed. Since its announcement, the search garnered significant attention, with over 6,000 submissions received.
Kevin Belwood, the Group Head of Broadcast, shared insights into the next steps and the broader vision of this initiative, highlighting the immense task ahead as they prepare to sift through these entries.
"We've had over 6,000 submissions, and we are planning now to go through them over the next two weeks or so. We'll whittle them down to 106," Belwood explained. This selection will encompass a variety of roles, including approximately 40 radio presenters, several DJs, and a handful of emcees.
The first round of auditions is scheduled for August 10th. Those who make it to the top 106 will be invited in a day prior to receive a briefing on what is expected during their auditions. "We want them to know what they should be doing and what they can bring," Belwood stated. The auditions will involve presenting in front of judges, with successful candidates moving on to create and present a radio show in subsequent rounds.
Bellwood emphasized the search for fresh talent rather than seasoned professionals. "I'm not looking for people who've been on radio before. I want people who are fresh and new to this business," he said. This focus aligns with NRG Radio's aim to discover and nurture young talent within the 18 to 24 age group, though there is flexibility for slightly older or younger candidates.
The contest spans various categories, including radio presenters, DJs, emcees, and podcasters. Each category has specific criteria. For podcasters, the emphasis is on unique and sellable ideas. "We're looking for really good, sellable podcasts and great ideas. Unusual ideas. Ideas that not necessarily have been done before," he noted. For radio presenters, personality and trustworthiness on air are crucial, and they will receive training before going live.
The exact number of finalists remains flexible, dependent on the quality of the candidates. "If we find five really good ones, we'll take five. If we only find two good ones, then we'll take two," Belwood explained noting that this approach ensures that only the best talent is chosen, irrespective of a predetermined quota.
The BEAST MODE MVP talent search not only aims to find new radio stars but also to expand NRG Radio's footprint in Uganda and beyond. "NRG is not just this radio station. We are planning in a number of other places," Belwood mentioned, hinting at the broader ambitions of the network.
As the contest progresses, the anticipation builds towards discovering the next wave of radio talent in Uganda. For the team at NRG, this search promises to be a significant platform for aspiring broadcasters, offering them an opportunity to showcase their skills and potentially launch their careers in the media industry.
