Embattled Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Anita Annet Among, has announced she will not seek a second term. Speaking at a thanksgiving ceremony on Sunday, Among made it clear she intends to serve only one term in office, expressing her hope that her deputy, Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, will succeed her in 2026.

The ceremony, held at St. Karoli Lwanga Kigarama Parish, was organized by Hon. Tayebwa's family in Mitooma district. The new church, a project spearheaded by Tayebwa, set the stage for Among's announcement. Among praised the people of Mitooma for electing Tayebwa, describing him as a "very disciplined leader" and "down to earth and very social."

"He is a deputy speaker who knows what his role is. We want to request you to bring him back," she said.

Among then made her intentions clear: "I only have one term to serve. When I finish serving my one term, I will give the seat to Rt Hon Tayebwa to continue. Because you don't need to cling to power… then I will hand it over to him."

Despite facing criticism for presiding over a parliament perceived as corruption-ridden and her own lavish lifestyle funded by taxpayers, Among has remained steadfast, with the support of President Museveni.
