In a recent social media twist, David Vidal Sans, a Digital Communications specialist at the European Union Parliament, stirred controversy by removing a tweet lauding Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, for his stance on human rights, including LGBTQ rights, in Uganda.
Vidal Sans initially took to Twitter to express his admiration for Kyagulanyi, even dubbing him the "People’s president." However, he later deleted the tweet without providing specific reasons. Despite this deletion, screenshots of the post swiftly circulated across various social media platforms.
The tweet read: "Honored to meet Uganda’s most prominent leader HEBobiWine. He is not only fighting for human and LGBTQ rights but also exposing the dictatorial reality of his country in the 2024 Oscar-nominated documentary, Bobi Wine: The People’s President."
This digital upheaval has ignited heated discussions within Uganda's online community.
Kyagulanyi has consistently denied allegations of actively promoting LGBTQ rights, despite facing such accusations in several media appearances.
Recently, Dr. Abed Bwanika of Masaka City's Kimaanya Kabonera Division submitted a petition to the National Unity Platform (NUP) leadership, urging clarity on the party's stance regarding LGBTQ issues.
Dr. Bwanika emphasized the urgency of the matter, citing widespread concerns among the public regarding perceived NUP support for homosexuality.
He referenced specific incidents, including Kyagulanyi's interviews with international media outlets, such as the British Broadcasting Corporation, where he appeared to advocate for LGBTQ rights despite Uganda's stringent laws against homosexuality.
Dr. Bwanika also raised suspicions regarding Kyagulanyi's alleged connections with international LGBTQ activists and sponsors, including Rev. Jesse Jackson and US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg.
Moreover, concerns were voiced about potential financial backing from LGBTQ organizations to NUP, potentially influencing leadership decisions, such as the removal of former Leader of the Opposition, Mathias Mpuuga, due to his differing stance on LGBTQ issues.
