Crested Cranes Win CECAFA Women Championship with a 3:1 Edge Past Burundi

Uganda’s National Women’s football team the “Crested Cranes” has won the CECAFA Women’s Championship after winning 3:1 against Burundi.

In the final played at FUFA Technical Center, Njeru, Sandra Nabweteme was the hero with a brace to her name, notching the first goal in second minute and also sealed the win in the 90+1’ minute, adding to Fazila Ikwaput ‘s goal that doubled the lead in the 44th minute.

Joelle Bukuru had halved the lead for Burundi in the 49th minute to give her side some hopes of recovery but Nabweteme’s second ended any hopes for the Burundi side of a silverware in this edition.

Burundi hoped for revenge in this game having also lost 4:1 to Uganda in the final match of their Group (A) that left Uganda with maximum points.

To Uganda and and Burundi, the tournament was a precursor to the 2022 Women Africa Cup of Nations that will take place from 2nd to 23rd July, 2022 in Morocco.

Fazila Ikwaput’s wonderful performance saw her win the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament accolade with Opa clement of Tanzania finishing as the tournament’s top scorer with seven goals. Daisy Nakaziro of Uganda cranes was the best Goalkeeper and Tanzania won the Fair Play Award.
