After a tough battle to join the Parliament of Uganda, Muhammad Ssegirinya only stayed in office for a few months but in that short period he accomplished alot many failed to fulfill in years, his victory was short-lived when he was imprisoned and suddenly fell sick for years leading to his death.
Muhammad Ssegirinya, widely known as “Mr. Update,” was a Ugandan politician, philanthropist, and advocate for social justice who rose from humble beginnings in Kyebando to represent Kawempe North in Parliament. Despite facing numerous challenges, including imprisonment and severe health complications.
Early Life and Education
Muhammad Ssegirinya, aka “Mr. Update,” was born and raised in Kyebando, Kawempe North, Kampala. From an early age, he exhibited a passion for community engagement and social justice, which later defined his political career.
He attended Pimba Secondary School in Kyebando, where he became known for his vibrant personality and eagerness to engage in debates and political discussions. While still a Senior Three student in 2006, Ssegirinya started calling into live political talk shows on radio, earning himself the nickname “Eddoboozi lye Kyebando” (The Voice of Kyebando).
Despite facing challenges in articulating himself in English, Ssegirinya's grassroots approach and connection to the local community helped him gain significant popularity.
Political Career
Ssegirinya's political aspirations began to take shape in his youth, but it wasn’t until the 2021 general elections that he emerged as a formidable political figure. Representing the National Unity Platform (NUP), led by Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), Ssegirinya contested and won the Kawempe North Parliamentary seat.
In a highly contested election, he defeated veteran politician Suleiman Kidandala, polling an overwhelming 41,197 votes against Kidandala’s 7,512. His grassroots campaigns, characterized by relatable messaging and his genuine commitment to addressing community issues, resonated with voters.
Before joining Parliament, Ssegirinya was known for his philanthropy and advocacy for local causes. His focus on improving the lives of the underprivileged earned him the admiration of many in his constituency.
Challenges in Office
Barely months after assuming office, Ssegirinya’s political career was overshadowed by legal troubles. In 2021, he and fellow NUP legislator Allan Ssewanyana were arrested and charged in connection with the Masaka machete killings, which left over 20 people dead in the Greater Masaka region.
The charges included murder, terrorism, and aiding and abetting terrorism. The arrests and subsequent legal battles were met with widespread criticism, with many suggesting the charges were politically motivated.
The two spent nearly 18 months on remand in Kigo Prison, during which time Ssegirinya’s health began to deteriorate. Despite being granted bail in September 2023, both MPs were rearrested shortly afterward. These events significantly affected Ssegirinya’s ability to serve his constituents effectively.
Health Struggles
Ssegirinya’s health deteriorated significantly during his time in detention. He was diagnosed with several conditions, including lung disease, hypertension, and skin cancer. His health challenges necessitated advanced treatment abroad.
In 2023, he was flown to Germany and later transferred to Amsterdam UMC Hospital in the Netherlands for specialized care. Although he was discharged in September after treatment, his condition remained critical.
In early 2024, Ssegirinya was admitted to Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, where he stayed for nearly six months. Despite receiving extensive treatment, his health worsened, and he was eventually transferred to Rubaga Hospital in Kampala, where he passed away on January 6, 2025, at the age of 37.
