The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Election Disputes Tribunal has declared Nakunda Beth Kayesu the duly elected NRM flag bearer for the Wakiso District Woman Member of Parliament seat, bringing to an end weeks of uncertainty that followed a petition challenging her victory.
The tribunal’s ruling comes after Rosemary Kirabira, one of Kayesu’s rivals in the party primaries, contested the results, citing missing declaration forms and alleged irregularities in the tallying process. Despite the challenge, the tribunal upheld the results, confirming Kayesu’s win with more than 46,000 votes, well ahead of her closest competitors.
Speaking after the ruling, Kayesu expressed gratitude, describing the decision as a victory not only for herself but for the people of Wakiso who patiently waited for the outcome. “I want to sincerely thank the people of Wakiso for trusting me with their vote and for remaining calm as we waited for the tribunal’s ruling,” she said. “This is our collective win, and I am ready to serve with humility and dedication.”
Kayesu also struck a conciliatory tone, pledging to work closely with both her supporters and those who lost in primaries. “I promise to work hand in hand with those who won and those who lost for the betterment of Wakiso. Together, we can build a stronger and united district,” she added.
Her confirmation as flag bearer caps a political journey rooted in grassroots leadership and community service. Over the years, Kayesu has risen steadily through the ranks of the NRM, serving in various roles within the party’s women’s structures and local councils.
She currently chairs Kirinda Cell in Busabala Ward (NRM), while also holding leadership positions in the district women’s league and the LC2 Women’s Council among others.
Outside formal politics, she has been recognized for her community work through the Kayesu Foundation, which trained hundreds of young people, women, and men in practical skills such as tailoring, catering, crafts, and hairdressing. The initiative was forced to close due to financial constraints during the COVID-19 pandemic, but it left a lasting impact on many households in Masajja Division and beyond.
With the tribunal’s decision now settled, Kayesu’s focus shifts to the 2026 general elections, where she will carry the NRM flag in Wakiso. Her supporters say the ruling has energized her campaign, while her message of unity and service continues to resonate with many across the district.
