Uganda’s military leadership is edging closer to relocating into a modern new headquarters after construction of the state-of-the-art Uganda People’s Defence Force and Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs complex in Mbuya passed the 75 percent completion mark.

The massive twin-tower facility located along Mbuya Hill on Chwa II Road is expected to become the new central command hub for both the UPDF and the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs.

According to the latest update released on May 13, 2026, construction has now reached the fifth and final level, with current works focusing on interior finishing, modern installations, and technological systems aimed at transforming the facility into one of the country’s most advanced security headquarters.

The project, estimated to cost approximately UGX 94 billion, is being handled by the UPDF Engineering Brigade and is expected to significantly improve operational coordination, security management, and administrative efficiency within Uganda’s defence sector.

Officials say the new headquarters will integrate modern military infrastructure and advanced technology designed to strengthen command capabilities and streamline communication between defence departments.

Construction of the complex officially began in August 2024 following a groundbreaking ceremony presided over by Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces.

By September 2025, the project had reportedly reached nearly 50 percent completion, prompting military leadership to push for faster progress and timely delivery.

The new facility is expected to consolidate both Ministry of Defence and UPDF headquarters functions within a highly secured zone in Mbuya, one of Kampala’s key military areas.

As work enters the final phase, the project is now being viewed as one of the most significant military infrastructure developments currently underway in Uganda.
