Heartbreak has gripped Rubanda District and the Kabale University community following the sudden death of Mugarura Victor, a 22-year-old first-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Agriculture and Land Use Management who left a heartwrecking note before death.

Mugarura was found dead by hanging at his family home in Hamurara cell, Bubare Town Council, as confirmed by Rubanda Police who registered it as a suicide case, though investigations are still ongoing to fully understand what may have led the young man to this tragic decision.

What makes the situation even more painful is a handwritten suicide note he left behind, titled “DEATH NOTE!!!,” in which he expressed emotional turmoil, deep apology, and spiritual reflection.

“I am sorry for this disappointment but hope you will forgive me. I also didn’t expect it, but this is what life is. Dear God, forgive me all my sins (AMEN). LIFE IS SCUM. Yours, MUGARURA VICTOR.”

His message has left many in tears — friends, family, lecturers, and fellow students now grappling with questions and grief. Described as quiet, smart, and kind-hearted, Mugarura had just finished his first year at Kabale University.

The university issued a public statement mourning the loss of the student:

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear student, Mr. Victory Mugarura, who had just completed his first year. Your smile, spirit, and kindness will never be forgotten.”

The statement also encouraged students and members of the university community to seek mental health support during this time, noting the importance of speaking out and leaning on one another.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out. Uganda has several organisations and helplines offering mental health support. Sometimes, just talking about it makes all the difference.

May Mugarura Victor rest in peace.
