On August 10th, Uganda faced a heart-wrenching disaster after Kiteezi landfill collapsed, burying homes and livestock under a massive heap of garbage. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has since addressed the tragedy and allocated a budget to help the dead and injured.

In a somber message, President Museveni expressed his deepest condolences to the families of those who perished in the collapse. With 12 confirmed dead and numerous others injured, the President's concern was palpable as he highlighted the grave safety concerns surrounding the landfill.

President Museveni did not shy away from holding those responsible accountable. He condemned the authorities who allowed residential settlements near such a dangerous site, pointing out that the very nature of the landfill posed significant health risks even before the collapse.

In response to the crisis, Museveni has mobilized the UPDF Special Forces to aid in the rescue operations at Kiteezi. His proactive approach also includes financial support: Ugx 5 million for each deceased individual and Ugx 1 million for each person injured. However, he made it clear that this financial assistance is separate from any future legal compensation that may arise if government agencies are found liable.

The President's address also called for a broader reflection on the dangers of settling in hazardous areas. He stressed the need for better urban planning and warned against the risks of living near waste sites, wetlands, and other potentially dangerous locations.
