In a firm display of internal discipline, Watoto Church yesterday (Sunday, 10 August 2025) announced the resignation of Youth Pastor Zane Mugabi on grounds of sexual misconduct.
During the Heart of Compassion service at Kibuli, Team Leader Pastor Julius Rwotlonyo addressed the congregation with sombre formality. Phones were set aside, the mood shifted, and Pastor Rwotlonyo announced the painful decision: Pastor Zane Mugabi was being relieved of his duties due to allegations that emerged in the aftermath of his wife’s passing.
It’s alleged that following the death of his wife, Pastor Eva Abwola (RIP)—who passed in March 2024 due to complications related to a septate uterus—Pastor Zane became involved in inappropriate relationships with church members, conduct that Watoto deems incompatible with its leadership standards.
Sources within the church shared that, “it’s alleged that… Pastor Zane had been sexually involved with some of the church members which Watoto frowns upon especially for its leadership team.”
Congregation Reaction and Church Response
Reaction among worshippers was mixed. One member, Hope Anguyo, penned a poetic quote: “the army that kills its wounded soldiers most is the church army.” On the other hand, some supported the church’s strict stance—citing concerns over rising single motherhood and a belief that strict accountability prevents deeper issues.
Watoto Church has called on members to pray for Pastor Zane during his period of reflection, repentance, and healing—framing this as a “season of compassion.”
