Spider-Noir has officially been cancelled after just one season, and the surprising part is that this wasn’t exactly a failed show.
Amazon has decided not to move forward with Season 2 of the Nicolas Cage-led Marvel series, despite the show generating significant attention and earning 11 Emmy nominations.
So why did Amazon cancel Spider-Noir.
The series starred Nicolas Cage as Spider-Man Noir, bringing the character into live action after Cage previously voiced him in the animated Spider-Verse movies. But this was a very different take on Spider-Man. Instead of the usual modern superhero setting, Spider-Noir took audiences to 1930s New York, mixing crime, mystery, gangsters and supernatural elements.
And Nicolas Cage was at the center of it, giving the character a completely different identity from the Spider-Man we’ve seen before.
The show also appeared to have a solid response, with 11 Emmy nominations putting it firmly on the awards radar. So naturally, fans expected Amazon to continue the story.
But streaming doesn’t work that way.
A show can get strong reviews, attract viewers and receive award nominations, and still be cancelled if the studio doesn’t believe another season makes financial or strategic sense. Production costs, audience size, long-term potential and the value of investing in another project can all play a role.
And apparently, Amazon decided that continuing Spider-Noir wasn’t the right move.
What’s interesting is that there was plenty of room for the story to continue. The first season established a completely different corner of the Spider-Man universe, and with its noir setting and supernatural elements, the series had a style that separated it from almost every other Marvel project.
But now, unless another platform steps in, Nicolas Cage’s live-action Spider-Man Noir ends with Season 1.
And that raises another question: what happens to the character?
For now, there’s no confirmed second season coming somewhere else, but cancelling the series doesn’t mean Spider-Man Noir itself is finished. The character remains popular, and Sony and Marvel have plenty of ways to use different versions of Spider-Man in the future.
In fact, Amazon isn’t abandoning Sony’s Marvel universe altogether. Instead, reports indicate that the studio is looking at other Marvel projects, suggesting that this may be more of a change in direction than an exit from the franchise.
And honestly, that’s what makes this cancellation so surprising. Spider-Noir had Nicolas Cage, a unique visual style, a fresh take on a familiar character, and 11 Emmy nominations, yet it still won’t get a second season.
