National Unity Platform (NUP) has lost another soldier in Rwampara after their flag bearer for the Woman MP seat, Sarah Kiconco crossing over to the National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Ms. Kiconco announced her decision to switch camps on Tuesday, effectively withdrawing her candidacy for the seat in a move that surprised opposition supporters in the region as she declared her intention to back the NRM flagbearer, Hon. Annah Kansiime, in the upcoming 2026 general elections.
The defection was formalized during a meeting with the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, who is also the Ruhinda North Member of Parliament. Mr. Tayebwa welcomed Ms. Kiconco to the ruling party, describing her transition as a testament to the NRM’s growing appeal and stable leadership.
Mr. Tayebwa noted that Ms. Kiconco’s decision reflects a broader desire for unity and collective progress as the country approaches a critical electoral cycle. He argued that such moves are essential for consolidating development and avoiding political fragmentation in the cattle corridor district.
The development is expected to trigger a realignment of political forces in Rwampara. For the NUP, the loss of a flagbearer so close to the peak of the campaign season leaves a vacuum in their grassroots mobilization efforts. Local political analysts say the move could consolidate the NRM’s base in the district, making the Woman MP race a more predictable contest for the ruling party.
