Ugandan opposition leader and president of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Bobi Wine (real name Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu), has fled Uganda after reportedly spending nearly two months in hiding and now most of his supporters are wondering where he has escaped to.
Bobi Wine went into hiding following the disputed January 15, 2026, presidential election, where incumbent President Yoweri Museveni was declared the winner.
He announced his departure in a video message posted on X (formerly Twitter) on March 14, 2026, stating that by the time viewers saw the video, he would have left the country for “critical engagements” abroad.
He emphasized that this was temporary, with plans to rally international support, consult allies, and pressure the Museveni administration before returning to continue pushing for freedom and democracy.

The specific country he fled to has not been publicly disclosed.
Reports from sources like the Associated Press, various Ugandan media outlets, and social media posts describe his destination as unknown or abroad (sometimes referred to as “exile” or an “unknown country”). Speculation in some posts mentions the United States (e.g., claims he went there weeks earlier or to engage with diaspora), but these are unconfirmed reports or rumors.
In the announcement, Bobi Wine deliberately did not reveal his location, likely for security reasons but the reason for fleeing is to escape an intensified military search and threats to his life following the election. He went into hiding shortly after the vote amid allegations of fraud, voter intimidation, and a raid on his home by security forces (which he escaped).
Concerns escalated due to public threats from army chief Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba (President Museveni’s son) on social media. Bobi Wine has described the move as necessary to “postpone” risks to his safety while mobilizing global support against what he calls a repressive regime, rather than facing potential arrest, harm, or worse if he remained.
