A wave of emotion and anger has hit supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) after the party deputy spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro lost his wife while still on remand in Luzira Prison.
Waiswa has been locked up at Luzira Upper Prison since September 2025, facing charges of unlawful drilling, accusations the NUP insists are fabricated and politically motivated.
According to the party, on the day the alleged offence happened, Waiswa was actually at the hospital with his wife, who was undergoing chemotherapy treatment.
Despite multiple attempts to secure bail, courts reportedly denied his release several times, even as his wife’s condition worsened.
This meant Waiswa remained behind bars through some of the most critical moments including Uganda’s January 2026 general elections, where he controversially ran for Parliament while still in detention.

His wife has passed away, with supporters saying he was never given a chance to be by her side during her final days.
The news has sparked an outpouring of grief online, with many sharing throwback wedding photos of the couple and questioning the human cost of ongoing political tensions in the country.
“This is beyond politics,” some supporters posted, pointing to the emotional toll on families caught in the middle of legal and political battles.
Fellow Ugandans,
It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of our dear sister and comrade, Edith Katende Mufumbiro, the wife of our Deputy Spokesperson, Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro.
Edith passed on after 3:00am today following a hard-fought battle with cancer. At the time… pic.twitter.com/dJEMmndMcm
