The recently concluded Wakiso District Woman Member of Parliament NRM flag bearer primaries were heated up and marred by dissatisfaction and chaos. This was after those contestants that thought were destined to win the election were defeated by a one Nakunda Beth Kayesu who campaigned for just less than a month beating those that were strategizing for more than a year.

Now, for starters these major two candidates including Kirabira Rose Kobusinge and Namakula Radhiyyah Khamis were confident for having roots inside the entire district to the village level and under looked Kayesu Beth who joined the race on the very last day of the nomination.

Kirabira Rose Kobusinge being the one that had set up structures earlier, she thought the race between her and Namakula Radhiyyah and of course she saw her win coming. Nakunda Beth Kayesu being the ‘underdog’ had a better chance of coming from behind and surpass them unaware and she employed a few things to win.

Existing Structures

Hon. Nakunda Beth Kayesu has all along been inside the NRM party structures but that part was ignored by the remaining candidates and competitors. She has held positions like being the current Chairperson for Kirinda cell in Masajja Division found in Makindye Sabagabo Municipality. And again, she is the Chairperson Women’s Council Busabala ward, giving her a lot of access to the women and youths of the area which boosted her victory.

More to this, she is the reigning Chairperson Women’s League of Wakiso District where she takes on 720 villages and is considered the mother of all women and youths in the district and it was easy for her to take on the lead so easily than her competitors who just held posters and names.

Philanthropy at work

Again, Nakunda Beth Kayesu through her philanthropy work, she empowered more than 600 women, men and youths to get certificates in skills for free in Wakiso district and beyond that have helped them change their social and financial statuses. The impact of this is seen in her victory of the NRM primaries as well.

It should be remembered that, the recently concluded NRM flag bearer primaries saw Hon. Nakunda Beth Kayesu lead with 46,792 (45.5%), followed by Namakula Radhiyyah Khamis with 31,090 (30.3%) and lastly Kirabira Rose Kobusinge with 24,867 (24.2%) according to the final results released by Kawooya Shaban Kalungi the Wakiso District NRM Electoral Commission returning officer.
