Ugandan authorities have arrested more than 200 foreign nationals in a sweeping operation targeting illegal immigrants and undocumented business operators across the country.
According to Simon Peter Mundeyi, the crack downled by the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control focused on individuals suspected of violating visa conditions, operating without work permits, and engaging in unlawful business activities.
In Bukoto, at least 169 foreign nationals were detained during a raid on an apartment complex. Authorities say many were found without valid immigration documents, with investigations linking some to illegal online gaming and scamming operations.
Meanwhile, in Adjumani District, 62 Nigerian nationals were arrested for allegedly running a church and several businesses without the required work permits.
Officials say investigations are still ongoing, with more arrests possible as enforcement teams widen the operation.
The crackdown has sparked mixed reactions online. Many Ugandans have welcomed the move, arguing it will help protect local jobs and regulate business operations. Others, however, are calling for transparency in the process, warning against potential abuse, corruption, or selective enforcement.
Authorities insist the operation is part of a broader effort to restore order in the immigration system and ensure that all foreign nationals operating in Uganda comply with the law.
