Looks like trouble is boiling inside the Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF) after singer Eddy Kenzo publicly threatened to resign as President of the Federation, blaming confusion and power struggles over the management of artistes’ SACCO money.
Kenzo revealed during a live podcast that the Ministry of Finance wants to take over control of the funds and give the money directly to SACCOs instead of routing it through the Federation. This, he says, undermines UNMF’s purpose and leadership.
“There’s a lot of pressure between me, the Federation leadership, and the Ministry of Finance,” Kenzo said. “Out of respect, I can’t continue with this confusion. When I come back from Acholi, I’ll resign as Federation President and maybe you will appoint someone you like.”
The government had allocated Shs5 billion to UNMF last year, and President Museveni recently promised Shs10–20 billion annually to regional SACCOs under the Federation. But with the ministry’s new plan, Kenzo says the Federation is being stripped of its key role.
“How can artistes’ SACCO money be given to different associations without the Federation’s knowledge?” Kenzo questioned. “It means we will lose the monopoly of managing artistes’ money — and that’s dangerous for unity.”
