A few weeks ago, socials were flooded with emotional posts calling on well-wishers to help renowned chef Nalongo Mama D after she gave birth to twins, claiming she urgently needed money to clear hospital bills. Ugandans, with their soft hearts and mobile money apps, came through hard—over UGX 6 million was reportedly raised by sympathisers, fans, and celebs alike.
But now, here comes the mbu—that the whole thing could have been a setup. Eh! Twitter detectives and online watchdogs started whispering that the campaign might have been a money-making stunt and not a genuine medical emergency. The allegations lit up X (formerly Twitter), TikTok and everywhere in between.
Mama D, however, was quick to clap back.
“This was never a scam or any form of fraud. I am grateful to everyone who contributed,” she posted on her X account. “For those who feel wronged or want a refund, you are free to come and collect your money.”
She also accused unnamed haters of trying to ruin her name and destroy the connection she has built with her fans.
Just days earlier, Mama D had thanked UPDF for their support during her hospital stay after giving birth—which further confused netizens who thought the army may have footed the bills before later on deleting the tweet.
Now, people are wondering: if UPDF helped, what happened to the Shs6M+ collected from fans? And if it was genuine, why do some feel like they were emotionally manipulated?
The internet jury is still out. Some fans are standing by Mama D and blaming jealous clout chasers for cooking up false stories. Others, however, are calling for receipts, breakdowns, and accountability.
So far, no police or official investigation has been announced, but Ugandans on social media are doing what they do best—investigating with full energy, screenshots and archived posts.
