Ssewa Ssewa, whose real name is James Ssewakiryanga, is the founder of Janzi Band, a Kampala-based group formed in 2009 that blends Afro-fusion, contemporary and world music with traditional Ugandan sounds.
He is also known for creating the Janzi, a harp-like string instrument that has become central to the band’s performances. The group has combined original music with covers and has performed at festivals, weddings, corporate functions and entertainment venues in Uganda.
Janzi Band released its debut album, Eka (Home), in 2017 and has featured on stages including Bayimba, Pearl Rhythm, Milege, Blankets and Wine and Nyege Nyege.
The Independence weekend shows come as the band enters a new phase following changes to its line-up in 2026, with several long-serving members leaving the group.
Ssewa Ssewa and Professor Joewi’s shows offer exclusive entertainment for audiences looking to celebrate the national holiday through live music and nightlife.
