{"id":789,"date":"2025-05-02T18:57:50","date_gmt":"2025-05-02T18:57:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blizz.co.ug\/news\/?p=789"},"modified":"2025-05-02T18:58:54","modified_gmt":"2025-05-02T18:58:54","slug":"ugandan-un-judge-lydia-mugambe-sentenced-to-6-years-in-uk-over-modern-slavery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blizz.co.ug\/news\/ugandan-un-judge-lydia-mugambe-sentenced-to-6-years-in-uk-over-modern-slavery\/","title":{"rendered":"Ugandan UN Judge Lydia Mugambe Sentenced to 6 Years in UK Over Modern Slavery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\" data-start=\"234\" data-end=\"450\"><em>Ugandan High Court judge and UN tribunal appointee Justice Lydia Mugambe has been sentenced to six years and four months in prison by a UK court after being found guilty of modern slavery-related charges.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"452\" data-end=\"710\">Mugambe, 50, who was appointed in 2023 to the United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, was convicted for forcing a young Ugandan woman to work without pay while she pursued postgraduate studies at Oxford University.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"712\" data-end=\"968\">According to Oxford Crown Court, Mugambe conspired with then-Uganda Deputy High Commissioner John Leonard Mugerwa to fraudulently secure the victim\u2019s visa in 2022, luring her into Britain under false pretenses and making her work as an unpaid maid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"970\" data-end=\"1019\"><strong>The court found Mugambe guilty on four charges:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1020\" data-end=\"1212\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1020\" data-end=\"1075\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1022\" data-end=\"1075\">Facilitating travel with the intent of exploitation<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1076\" data-end=\"1107\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1078\" data-end=\"1107\">Forcing someone into labour<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1108\" data-end=\"1157\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1110\" data-end=\"1157\">Conspiring to mislead immigration authorities<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1158\" data-end=\"1212\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1160\" data-end=\"1212\">Attempting to intimidate the victim into silence<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_793\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-793\" style=\"width: 1347px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-793\" src=\"https:\/\/blizz.co.ug\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Mugambe.jpg\" alt=\"Lydia Mugambe\" width=\"1347\" height=\"1684\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blizz.co.ug\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Mugambe.jpg 1347w, https:\/\/blizz.co.ug\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Mugambe-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/blizz.co.ug\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Mugambe-819x1024.jpg 819w, https:\/\/blizz.co.ug\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Mugambe-768x960.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blizz.co.ug\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Mugambe-1229x1536.jpg 1229w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1347px) 100vw, 1347px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-793\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lydia Mugambe<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1214\" data-end=\"1333\">Despite pleading not guilty and claiming she was the victim, Judge David Foxton didn\u2019t hold back during sentencing:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1335\" data-end=\"1455\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1337\" data-end=\"1455\">\u201cYou have shown absolutely no remorse\u2026 Instead, you continue, wholly unjustifiably, to depict yourself as the victim.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1457\" data-end=\"1562\">The court also ordered Mugambe to pay \u00a312,600 (approx.
