A fun family outing ended in heartbreaking tragedy over the weekend after Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) engineer Gershom Rwakasanga drowned in the River Nile while trying to take photos with his daughter at Busowoko Resort Beach in Jinja.

According to eyewitnesses, Rwakasanga had gone to the scenic falls on Saturday evening for a relaxed outing with his little girl. While capturing photos and videos near the riverbank, he reportedly slipped and fell into the fast-moving waters.

Attempts to rescue him immediately failed as the strong current swept him away. His daughter, who was right beside him, escaped unhurt but was left in total shock.

Busowoko Resort Beach General Manager Abdullah Suuta confirmed the tragic incident, revealing that Rwakasanga arrived around 5:30 p.m. and was taking pictures near the water massage point, a deep and slippery section of the river.

“He may have slipped and hit his head on the rocks, which made him unconscious. His body got trapped between rocks, making rescue difficult,” Suuta explained.

The resort’s team of divers, assisted by the Police Marine Unit, conducted a night search but failed to locate him. His body was finally recovered on Sunday afternoon around 12:30 p.m., trapped between rocks.

Rwakasanga, who worked as Operations Manager at UNOC, is being mourned by friends, colleagues, and family as a kind-hearted man who deeply loved his family.

Authorities have since urged the public to be extra cautious when taking photos or exploring near dangerous sections of the River Nile, which has claimed several lives in recent years.

Funeral arrangements for the late Gershom Rwakasanga are expected to be announced later this week.
