Ugandans joined Kenyans in mourning the death of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, who passed away earlier this month in India at the age of 80.

A memorial prayer service was held on October 28, 2025, at All Saints Cathedral, Kampala, where hundreds of mourners gathered to celebrate the life and legacy of the veteran opposition leader.

The event, organized by businessman Capt. Mike Mukula, attracted several dignitaries from both Uganda and Kenya. Ugandan Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja represented President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, while Governor Anyang Nyong’o and Rosemary Odinga, Raila’s daughter, led the Kenyan delegation.

Archbishop Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu delivered a heartfelt message, praising Raila Odinga for his dedication to democracy, peace, and justice across Africa, describing him as a true son of the continent who believed in unity and dialogue.

The service also emphasized Odinga’s pan-African legacy, which continues to inspire leaders across borders. Meanwhile, in Kenya, his Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has temporarily endorsed his brother Oburu Oginga as interim leader as the country continues to mourn the fallen statesman.

Raila Odinga’s death has left a huge gap in East Africa’s political landscape, and tributes continue to pour in from across the region in honor of his decades-long struggle for democracy and equality.
