Popular Ugandan TikToker and influencer Chicken Chicken, real name Anthony Katongole, has publicly apologized following backlash over controversial comments he made about Rwanda being a poor and suffering country.
Chicken, who traveled to Rwanda for a brief stay, sparked outrage after appearing on a YouTube podcast where he claimed that Rwanda had narrow roads, old cars, and alleged that many citizens were poor and went to bed hungry.
The remarks quickly ignited fury among Rwandans and supporters of the country on social media, with many taking to TikTok and other platforms to call him out for what they described as disrespect and spreading falsehoods about Rwanda.
Facing intense backlash, Chicken Chicken issued a heartfelt apology, going down on his knees as he asked for forgiveness from both President Paul Kagame and the people of Rwanda.
“I want to apologize to the ambassador of Rwanda in Uganda, His Excellency President Paul Kagame. I documented my visit to your country, but unfortunately, people focused only on the negative things I said, ignoring the good parts. I ask for your forgiveness,” Chicken pleaded.
He extended the apology to all Rwandans living in Uganda and those across the world who felt offended by his comments.
“To all Rwandans in Uganda and anyone affiliated with the country who was hurt by my words — please forgive me. I sincerely apologize for my mistake,” he added.
Despite the apology, debates continue online, with some forgiving him, while others demand that influencers act more responsibly when speaking about other countries.
