Things are getting a bit bitter in Tanzania as the government just blocked access to X (formerly Twitter) after hackers hijacked the official police account and posted “fake” info about President Samia Suluhu.
NetBlocks confirmed the app is now inaccessible across major networks as the police launch an investigation. President Suluhu had literally just told law enforcement to tighten cybersecurity — talk about bad timing!
This all comes as Tanzania heads for October elections, and tensions are sky-high. Opposition leader Tundu Lissu is on trial for treason, and last week, Kenyan activists like Martha Karua and Boniface Mwangi flew in to support him — only to be detained and deported.
Suluhu clapped back, accusing them of trying to destabilize the country:
“We won’t tolerate foreign activists disrupting our peace.”
Meanwhile, the crackdown on X is part of a wider push in East Africa for more control over social media.
