Retired Assistant Commissioner of Police Sam Omala Dies After Long Battle with Cancer

Retired Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Sam Omala has passed away at the age of 64 after a long battle with cancer leaving behind more than 12 children and over eight grandchildren.

His death was announced on Monday, April 28, by Capt. Mike Mukula, his former boss at Arrow Security Systems Ltd, through a post on X (formerly Twitter). Mukula revealed that Omala died at 7:00am at Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala.

At the time of his passing, Omala was serving as the deputy chief executive officer and director of operations at Arrow Security Systems Ltd. Mukula, who is also the National Resistance Movement (NRM) vice-chairman for the eastern region, said funeral arrangements would be communicated later.

Born in Tororo district, Omala joined the Uganda Police Force in 1980 as a Constable and steadily rose through the ranks to become Assistant Commissioner of Police.

He became a well-known figure during the “Walk to Work” protests that erupted after the 2011 general elections. As Kampala North Operations Commander, Omala was at the forefront of the police operations around opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye’s residence in Kasangati, Wakiso district.

The “Walk to Work” protests, organized by the opposition group Action for Change, were a response to alleged government corruption and the soaring cost of living.
