National Unity Platform (NUP) is once again under debate for how it’s handling internal elections and candidate selection ahead of 2026, after dumping Bukenya Luyombya and letting Nubian Li through.
Nubian Li, real name Buken Ali, a longtime confidant and musical partner to party president Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), has declared his interest in the Nakawa Division Mayor seat. While his name draws support from loyal fans of the “Firebase” era and NUP diehards, insiders say his rise is anything but organic.
According to party sources, Anthony Bukenya Luyombya, who had already expressed interest in the same seat and built grassroots momentum, was asked to “step down for the sake of party unity.” The phrasing didn’t sit well with many, who now feel that loyalty to Bobi Wine is becoming more important than merit or public support within the party.
Supporters online are calling it what it looks like: clearing the path for insiders.
“If you’re not in Bobi Wine’s circle, your chances are limited,” a frustrated party youth leader posted anonymously. “Bukenya Luyombya has been on the ground, speaking to people, understanding their issues. Then Nubian shows up and he’s the candidate?”
The situation has stirred wider conversations about fairness and internal democracy in NUP. While Nubian Li remains a beloved figure, many believe political leadership should be earned through engagement, experience, and merit—not relationships.
Online, supporters are divided. Some argue Nubian Li deserves the platform because of his long-time sacrifice and loyalty to the “struggle.” Others say the same logic is what ruins every other party: elevating friends instead of leaders.
As Nakawa voters watch the developments unfold, one thing is clear—this isn’t just a local contest. It’s a reflection of where Uganda’s biggest opposition party might be headed.
