Shock and grief have engulfed Kikuube District following the sudden death of LC5 Chairperson Banura Peter, the son of Uganda’s Ambassador to Burundi, Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Matayo Kyaligonza, who was killed in a tragic hit-and-run accident.

Banura reportedly lost his life after being knocked by a speeding Toyota Hiace, commonly known as a “drone.”

The fatal crash happened at Butyamba Village in Kikuube Town Council, where the district boss was hit before the driver fled the scene.

Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke confirmed the incident, revealing that Banura was rushed to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital but did not survive.

“He was taken to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead,” Rusoke said.

Authorities have since impounded the vehicle involved, and a manhunt is currently underway to track down the driver who escaped immediately after the crash.

“Efforts are ongoing to identify, trace, and arrest the driver to assist with ongoing investigations,” Rusoke added.

Banura’s death has triggered an outpouring of tributes from leaders across the country, many describing him as a calm, humble, and dedicated servant.

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja praised his leadership, noting that as the pioneer LC5 Chairperson of Kikuube, he played a key role in shaping the district’s growth.

“We have lost a very humble man who still had much life ahead of him,” she said.

State Minister Balaam Barugahara also mourned Banura, calling him a peaceful and patriotic leader whose passing is a huge loss to his family, Bunyoro Kingdom, and the nation.
