Ugandan music heavyweight Bebe Cool has called on the government to set aside $8 million every year to support local music talent and take Ugandan sound to the global stage.
While speaking in Ntungamo over the weekend, the Gagamel boss passionately pitched his vision: pick four promising artists — two male and two female — and invest $1 million in each annually to push their brands internationally.
“That’s only $8 million a year — less than UGX 25 billion — and we can have our own global stars. The UK is doing it. Tanzania is doing it. Diamond Platnumz is the proof,” Bebe Cool said.
He insisted that this isn’t about charity, it’s smart investment with major returns for the country. And guess what? Tanzanian star Diamond Platnumz was right there backing him up.
“When you invest in artists, you’re not gambling. You’re creating jobs. I came here with 24 people — that’s 24 families I’m supporting. This industry feeds people!” Diamond explained.
The “Jeje” hitmaker urged Ugandans not to turn the idea into a political debate, stressing that investing in creatives is national development too.
“Don’t politicize it. This isn’t about one artist. It’s about impact. Invest in music the way you invest in roads — we build dreams that pay back double.”
Bebe Cool emphasized that just like the government supports athletes and other sectors, the entertainment industry deserves the same energy — not just talk, but real money.
