The heartbreaking passing of Dr. John Bosco Spire Kiggundu last Saturday shook the nation, sparking a storm of rumors and speculation across social media. But during his requiem mass at St. Joseph’s Catholic Parish in Lweza, the family finally addressed the elephant in the room—what really happened to the celebrated gynecologist and Henrob Hospital proprietor?
According to his elder brother, Dr. Julius Luyimbazi, Dr. Kiggundu died of acute cardiomyopathy, a sudden and natural heart condition. The postmortem, conducted by police pathologist Dr. Moses Byaruhanga, found that one of the vessels responsible for returning blood to his heart was severely narrowed, and a section of the heart wall was weak—clear indicators of the heart disease that ultimately claimed his life.
“There were no injuries, no signs of struggle, no poison, and nothing unusual in his stomach. He passed of natural causes,” Luyimbazi clarified to mourners, urging the media and public to refrain from spreading false stories.
His final hours, as explained by the family, showed a man trying to manage discomfort quietly. After completing surgeries at his Zana-based hospital, Dr. Kiggundu drove toward Kajjansi, parked his car at a nearby hotel, and asked to rest.
CCTV footage confirmed he walked in alone, calmly spoke to the receptionist, and took a room without registering. He passed away in that room peacefully later that evening.
Family members grew concerned when he failed to return home and launched a search the next morning. It wasn’t until Saturday midday that they discovered his location and confirmed the tragic news.
As Uganda continues to mourn the loss of one of its brightest medical minds, the truth brings some relief and much-needed closure to a week filled with confusion, questions, and deep sorrow.
