Renowned Ugandan gynaecologist and fertility expert Dr. John Bosco Spire Kiggundu has been laid to rest today, Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at his ancestral home in Butozi, Masaka District, following an emotional send-off attended by loved ones, medical professionals, and members of the community.
Dr. Kiggundu’s death sent shockwaves through the country after he was found dead in a Kampala guest house on June 22. While early reports speculated foul play, a postmortem later confirmed he succumbed to a heart attack, with no evidence pointing to anything suspicious. His brother, renowned academic and cartoonist Dr. Jimmy Spire Ssentongo, also confirmed the cause of death.
The final send-off began with a requiem mass at St. Joseph Lweza Parish, after which his body was transported to Masaka for burial. Hundreds gathered to pay their last respects to the man who dedicated his life to maternal health, endometriosis awareness, and helping women achieve parenthood.
The team from Henrob Hospital in Zana, where Dr. Kiggundu served as Executive Director, was led by Medical Director Dr. Justine Walusimbi, who delivered a heartfelt tribute. She described Dr. Spire as “a selfless and passionate professional who gave his all to his patients and the community.”
She further assured mourners that the Henrob Hospital team would carry on his legacy with unwavering dedication.
The loss of Dr. Kiggundu, who had quietly become a pillar in Uganda’s reproductive health space, has left a gap that will not easily be filled.
