Kasese residents were thrown into shock after a money van caught fire near the National Resistance Movement (NRM) offices in Nyamwamba Division, Kasese Municipality, destroying millions.

The incident, which happened under unclear circumstances, involved what is believed to be a cash-in-transit or bullion van transporting money or other valuable materials. According to reports from Kasese Guide Radio, the fire spread quickly, engulfing the vehicle and reducing its contents to ashes before any meaningful rescue could be mounted.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as thick smoke billowed into the air, attracting residents, traders and passersby who gathered in disbelief as the blaze consumed the van. By the time firefighters and security personnel intervened, the vehicle had already suffered extensive damage.

While authorities are yet to release an official statement, preliminary information indicates that materials worth millions of shillings were destroyed in the fire. The exact amount lost has not yet been established.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, and it is still unclear whether the incident was the result of a mechanical fault, an electrical failure, or other factors. No injuries or fatalities had been reported by the time of publication.

Security agencies reportedly cordoned off the area as investigations commenced, amid heightened interest given the van’s proximity to NRM offices and the sensitive nature of its cargo.

The incident has sparked fresh concern among residents about the safety of cash transportation and emergency response readiness in the municipality. Many have taken to social media to question how a vehicle carrying such high-value cargo could be completely destroyed before containment.
